TUESDAY OF THE TWENTY-FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Lk 7:11-17) - THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Updated: 17 hours ago

"Young man, I tell you, arise!" (Lk 7:14)

FIRST READING: 1 Cor 12:12-14, 27-31a

Brothers and sisters:

As a body is one though it has many parts,

and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body,

so also Christ.

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body,

whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons,

and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Now the body is not a single part, but many.

Now you are Christ's Body, and individually parts of it.

Some people God has designated in the Church

to be, first, Apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers;

then, mighty deeds;

then gifts of healing, assistance, administration,

and varieties of tongues.

Are all Apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers?

Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing?

Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY: Lk 7:11-17

Jesus journeyed to a city called Nain,

and his disciples and a large crowd accompanied him.

As he drew near to the gate of the city,

a man who had died was being carried out,

the only son of his mother, and she was a widow.

A large crowd from the city was with her.

When the Lord saw her,

he was moved with pity for her and said to her,

"Do not weep."

He stepped forward and touched the coffin;

at this the bearers halted,

and he said, "Young man, I tell you, arise!"

The dead man sat up and began to speak,

and Jesus gave him to his mother.

Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, exclaiming,

"A great prophet has arisen in our midst,"

and "God has visited his people."

This report about him spread through the whole of Judea

and in all the surrounding region.

TUESDAY OF THE TWENTY-FOURTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - Gospel (Lk 7:11-17)

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear People of God,

The Word of God in today's Gospel, God shows humanity the great power of God and the immense mercy God has towards His mankind.

It is because of God's deep mercy that He sees and feels the pain of humans when we encounter extreme suffering. He never abandons humanity, as in the image of the widow in the Gospel: She had an only son, and death took away her son's life. There is nothing more painful than losing the person you love, the person you consider the most precious in your life. Faced with the suffering of the widow, God showed His power and mercy by bringing her dead son back to life.

Through this, God wants to tell all humankind that God has full authority over human life. Whoever wants to have life must run to God. For no one in this world has the power to restore the dead and come back to life like God. It is the power to bring the dead back to life that makes humanity fearful, praising and glorifying God that Jesus is a great prophet who appears in the world, and God has visited His people. From the beginning of time to the present, no one has the power to bring the dead back to life like He can. That is why humans hail Him as king, the God who comes to the world to save mankind.

Therefore, the Word of God today calls for humanity whoever wants to have eternal life, must run to God, make peace with Him, live, and follow His teachings. Do not follow the temptations of the world, then we will have eternal happy lives in the Kingdom of God.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
