THURSDAY OF THE SEVENTEENTH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME - Mt 13:47-53 - THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

"Put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away, Thus it will be at the end of the age." (Mt 13:48-49)

READING OF THE DAY

A reading from the Book of Jeremiah

Jer 18:1-6

This word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:

Rise up, be off to the potter’s house;

there I will give you my message.

I went down to the potter’s house and there he was,

working at the wheel.

Whenever the object of clay which he was making

turned out badly in his hand,

he tried again,

making of the clay another object of whatever sort he pleased.

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

Can I not do to you, house of Israel,

as this potter has done? says the LORD.

Indeed, like clay in the hand of the potter,

so are you in my hand, house of Israel.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

From the Gospel according to Matthew

Mt 13:47-53

Jesus said to the disciples:

“The Kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea,

which collects fish of every kind.

When it is full they haul it ashore

and sit down to put what is good into buckets.

What is bad they throw away.

Thus it will be at the end of the age.

The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous

and throw them into the fiery furnace,

where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.”

“Do you understand all these things?”

They answered, “Yes.”

And he replied,

“Then every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of heaven

is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom

both the new and the old.”

When Jesus finished these parables, he went away from there.

THURSDAY OF THE SEVENTEENTH WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME - Mt 13:47-53

THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE

Dear People of God,

Today's Word of God, Jesus continues teaching everyone about the Kingdom of Heaven through the parable of the net. The Kingdom of Heaven is filled with love and welcomes all His children to enjoy happiness with their beloved Father.

Jesus told the parable of the Kingdom of Heaven like a net thrown into the sea to catch fish of every kind; both good fish and bad fish. God wants to tell everyone that God always loves every person. He does not distinguish between good and bad people. He lets people know about the immense love of God the Father so that people know how to repent, abandon sin, and return to the God of love. In this world, no one has a love as great as His. However, people today are still indifferent to God's love, busy seeking worldly fame and fortune rather than seeking the Kingdom of Heaven.

Through today's Gospel, He wants to emphasize to everyone that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a net cast down to cover all humanity. He will pull up all the good fish and bad fish. That means when the day comes when He calls each person out of this world, the good fish are good people, and He will let them enjoy happiness with God, and the bad fish are people who do not live according to God's teachings, He will remove them from His Kingdom. While living on earth, Jesus calls on everyone to live well to please Him, so that when God calls them out of this world, everyone will enjoy happiness in the Kingdom of Heaven forever, because God the Father does not want to lose any of His children and does not want anyone to be removed from His Kingdom.

In the Word of God today, everyone is called to look up to the love of Jesus Christ on the cross, repent of our sins, return to God, and He will forgive us and grant us eternal happiness.

Thanks be to God. Amen.
