“Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.” (Lk 11:30)
FIRST READING - GAL 4:22-24, 26-27, 31–5:1
A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Galatians
Brothers and sisters:
It is written that Abraham had two sons,
one by the slave woman and the other by the freeborn woman.
The son of the slave woman was born naturally,
the son of the freeborn through a promise.
Now this is an allegory.
These women represent two covenants.
One was from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery;
this is Hagar.
But the Jerusalem above is freeborn, and she is our mother.
For it is written:
Rejoice, you barren one who bore no children;
break forth and shout, you who were not in labor;
for more numerous are the children of the deserted one
than of her who has a husband.
Therefore, brothers and sisters,
we are children not of the slave woman
but of the freeborn woman.
For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm
and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.
GOSPEL OF THE DAY - LK 11:29-32
From the Gospel according to Luke
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
“This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here.”
MONDAY OF THE TWENTY-EIGHTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME-Gospel (Lk 11:29-32)
THE WORD OF GOD FOR EVERYONE
Dear People of God,
The Word of God today calls everyone: to repent of all their mistakes towards God and others; and listen and practice the words of God.
The word of God given to people in today's world and in ancient times is that only those who know how to listen and practice the words of God will have eternal life and happiness in the Kingdom of Heaven. As in the past, the people of Nineveh lived in the quagmire of sin, but they listened to the words of the prophet Jonah, whom God sent. He called everyone: to repent; and thanks to their listening and repentance, they were healed by God, were driven away from evil, and protected from the disasters of the world.
Today's Word of God also invites everyone to always listen to God's teachings in daily life, which are the words of Jesus Christ, who came to the world to accompany and live with people. There is nothing happier than having the Son of God Himself humble Himself to become human, to become like other human beings, and allowing humanity to participate in God's life and hear God's teachings directly. God invites everyone: be wise to listen to the words of Jesus Christ who came to the world as a human, because His words have the power to drive away Satan, and bring eternal life to people.
In the past, the prophet Jonah brought God's words to warn and call people to repentance. They believed and lived according to God's teachings. Moreover, in today's world, people are truly happy to be taught directly by the words of Jesus Christ. Today, He calls everyone:
Always listen to the teachings of God and live according to His invitation.
Repent, abandon the path of sin, and return to God; do not live in passion, sin, do not live in hatred, or jealousy.
Return to make peace with God and have eternal life in His Father's Kingdom.
Thanks be to God. Amen.
